Moss on roof tiles

The whole of my roof tiles are covered with moss. What causes it and how to get rid of it for good please.

It seems to love the dark side of gritty (cast cement) tiles
You can't get rid of it for good, but there are treatments (like a bleach) that will kill it. Usually has to be blasted off.

Yep its shade,my parents had the same problem, they had someone round to blast it all off as albags says, then they coated it in some sort of, well, coating that is supposed to stop it happening again. Looks like new, hope its not some sort of rip off that will rot the roof after 2 years!

my moss seems to grow very well in sunlight, but it's probably some sort of exotic tropical import.

you could try Everbuild Moss Away concentrate, you can spray it on using a jet wash attachment, if you have one, and it is not a bleach comtaminate. Of course the only problem is getting up to the roof but with spraying at least you dont have to go on the actual roof surface. Unfortunately gone are the days when you knew someone you could get on a weekend to actually scrape it off. H&S reigns these days and so does the cost because of it.

If you don't really care what it looks like, is there any benefit to getting rid of the moss?
Does it do any real harm to the tiles?
The magpies seem to enjoy picking off at times.

It's good at blocking guttering and downpipes just when you don't want it .. in the winter.
It 'can' under certain circumstances cause roof leaks due to failure of water to run off, and as earth accumulates.

Thanks, Albags. Just cleaned my bungalow gutters and most of it seemed to be sand and grit so just wondered if the moss affected or disintegrated the tiles.

Unless you can afford to have some builder erect a scaffloding to clear it off, then forget it.
