What is LOL please?

Oh dear, I hope I'm not asking a question with too obvious an answer. I've noticed that many ABers replying to posts sometimes end their reply with the letters 'lol', or they simply type that as a reply.

Sorry, but I don't know what it means. Can anyone tell me please?

I think it's important sometimes to add an LOL or a ;-) to the end of a statement that could otherwise be read as a bit brusque or anal.

If something makes me laught (and it often does) then I will write "LOL @ AP" (for instance,,,,) Is your pic hand-coloured, AP, it's very pretty?

I honestly can't understand what has gone wrong with the link which I posted as a 'copied and pasted item' All very strange because although it doesn't work with my Firefox ( default) it does with my Internet explorer.Explorer.

Yes Boxtops - looks as if you've spotted my colour-blindness, it was my first attempt to colourise a B & W pic - guessing it's a bit out of whack.

Tonyted - I just kept wondering what lol meant. It was one of those occasions where everyone used it so frequently I thought I was probably the only person daft enough not to know what it was. I didn't like to ask and it took me four years to do so. I'm pleased I did though. Thanks again all.
