AVI to MPEG

I currently use a program called Cucusoft to convert my downloaded AVI files to MPEG,which I then burn to disc as a VCD.While Cucusoft seems to do the job ok,it is incredibly slow (about 4 hrs to convert 700mb).Can anyone recommend a different faster program? Ive looked on Downloads . com and there is one called Easy Video Converter,but I do not want to download it if it is not very good.
