in reply to tim baxter, Lack of competition is not a good enough answer surely, as competition does not equate with size, otherwise the human race would be tiny by now!

In the world of dinosaurs there were very small ones living alongside their bigger brothers and consequently were more agile and could evade capture more easily. The more they downsized the better their chance of survival. The very big ones had to grow bigger in each generation just as in the early world navies the bigger the battleship the stronger you were against other big guns.
