Maggots at night?

Over the past couple of weeks we've started to notice maggot type creatures collect in our porch at night when it is raining. They start gathering there in the evening and gradually throughout the night turn into a huge amount, but are gone when it's daylight the next day. They seem to collect towards the side where our porch light is, but there is no visible sign of where they are coming from. Are the attracted by the light? We have quite a few slugs around in wet weather, are they baby slugs? We don't know what to do or how to get rid of them. Is anyone else having similar trouble?

the are crane fly larvae. We had the same problem with a previous newly laid lawn

Here's an american website with good photos and descriptions. It says that you usually see the larvae earlier in the year, I have certainly seen them in late summer/autumn
