tinned red kidney beans

when you use these, do you drain the gloop and rinse the beans before using them or just throw the whole lot in?
i always drain and rinse but i'm not sure why really, it doesn't say to on the tin, just don't fancy that gloopy stuff going into the chilli i suppose. not even sure what the gloopy stuff is...starch of some description?

I believe the goop is full of preservatives.

Always rinse before use; solution is calcium chloride which prevents beans from falling apart - which they would do canned in plain water.

Drain and rinse if they are plain kidney beans though I tend to buy the ones in chili sauce as they are really tasty - not much use if you are putting them in a salad I suppose!

What I've never had an answer to is ... Why aren't you supposed to put them in anything 'metallic' once you've opened the tin?

I always drain and rinse them, never realy thought about it before, just have always done it. If we have tinned sweetcorn I always drain and rinse them then heat in water, husband says he doesnt like the taste of the water there in, to strong

I instinctively rinsed off the beans. Very pleased to see that barb7771 read on the tin that you should. I admire you Barb! I have never read anything that comes written on a tin of vegetables!

Naz: once opened, air gets to contents and if these are even slightly acidic and placed in contact with metal, a reaction could occur, leading to strange tastes or sensations. Best stick with glass.

Yes Naz I tend to look at the pictures and if I see peas then I do read if mushy or garden or processed, but anything else no. I didnt realise that there was anything much to say about tinned vegetables but now I find I am wrong.......

And another thing - some cans are coated inside to prevent particularly acidic contents from touching the metal. Subject exhausted (as am I!).

Am I right in saying that you must boil red kidney beans before eating ? I'm sure I've read somewhere that they are poisenous unless boiled.

Always drain and rinse to wash away the enormous amount of sodium it contains.

Nothing to do with sodium - the liquid in the can is calcium chloride solution.
