Do you have any songs where the lyrics just don't fit the way the song makes you feel?

I ike the song "The circle is small" by Gordon Lightfoot - it always makes me feel happy and romantic - just looked up the lyrics and it's all about the guys wife having an affair!!! Maybe I shouldn't mention to the other half that I like that song!

There are reportedly many people who have "I will always love you" played at their wedding receptions, when the song is in fact about a broken relationship.

me too Doc - though I am into a lot of woman singers at the mo - heidi talbot, ruth notman, karine polwart, kate rusby.....and kris drever even though he is a bloke!
I love Gordon Lightfoot too, by the way.

Actually, now I live in Germany, where much of the music played on the radio is English or American, it is amazing how many people sing along with the lyrics (more or less accurately - English wasn't taught much in schools here in the east until comparitively recently) and haven't got a clue what they are singing. So the lyrics are actually meaningless to many people but they like the songs for the sound alone.

i used to have these song lyrics on my profile on another site, and folk would comment on how nice they were quite regularly, a lot of them changed there minds when i told them what they were actually about

When I first met you, you didn't realize
I can't forget you or your surprise
You introduced me to my mind
And left me wanting, you and your kind

My life was empty, forever on a down
Until you took me, showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you sweet leaf, though you can't hear

Straight people don't know, what you're about
They put you down and shut you out
You gave to me a new belief
And soon the world will love you sweet leaf

You'd be amazed at how many people have "Every Breath You Take" at their wedding.

I also heard of the case where a girl was about to marry a man whose surname was 'Jones', and they chose 'Me and Mrs Jones' by Billy Paul - outstanding stuff!
"i want you" by elvis costello
i remember as a kid the tom robinson band had their "glad to be gay" song out and every one would sing along to it, when people found out what it was all about, the singing stopped lol

it's amazing how many of these "love songs" are actually about people having affairs.

so steg - what are the lyrics about then? - and lol about tom robinson!

yes Dr filth - I remember hearing him on some radio show talking about writing that song - it was a commision I think.

Bednobs - so what's the story behind that one then?
We played "always look on the bright side of life" as we left our wedding - it raised some smiles - but we faded it out before we got to the Death verses.....
I'm assuming Steggy's song lyrics refer to weed?
i always thought it was about how much he wanted and loved her but it's also about an affair and how he feels after she's slept with someone else - starts all light and lovely then gets very dark
