Beer Mug?
4a by turns - y(e)t in the middle of Burns
4d beer mug - be E.R. mug

34a that has to be the answer but haven't figured out why yet
just realised:-

first = maiden
door = wicket, and that is on the left

Thanks again. I do like this setter as he/she does really make you think but at times I think he/she must be on a different planet to me. I still don't understand why the wicket is on the left. It must depend on where you are standing!! Ah well.
it's an across clue and the word on the left is wicket, the word on the right is maiden

p.s. wicket meaning door is given here as defn 4 http://dictionary.ref...t?r=75&src=ref&ch=dic
