Computer fan

I can hear the fan in my PC constantly whirring, up and down in tone. Is this bad? Do you know what it's doing when it makes this sound? Should I be worried? It seems to have stopped now I'm typing!

The speed of the CPU fan increases and decreases in response to the resistor fitted at the CPU to measure temperature. The more the comp has to do, the hotter the CPU gets so the fan works harder to keep it cool.
If the noise is more than just a little, find some young neighbourhood geek and get the fan replaced. They do wear out and if replacing, don't skimp, get a good one.

mines just the same.
i dont even need to be doing alot for it to start whirring away.
maybe have a go at cleaning the fan?
ive tried running the hoover nozzle over the vents at the back of my laptop, but still no good.
you can get to it inside by removing the keyboard (or through the back) and give it a clean and you can buy cans of compressed air to do the job.
so im going to have to try that i think..
maybe youve got a dusty one too?! ;o)

Thanks! It was just curious because I wasn't using it at all, and the fan speed was changing a lot. It only went back to normal when I returned to work on it. Thanks for your answers though; Society- best not reply to a question if you can't answer it.
