Any reccomendations;
Needs to be good for 15,000 - 20,000 miles per year, mostly motorway
Insurance group - No more than Group 10/11
Performance - not crucial but would like a bit of go in it. Push comes to shove would take economy over performance
Sporty saloon if possible. Room for luggage and/or golf clubs.

I am drawn to german made, but would welcome suggestions, thanks.

craft; the strange thing is, in Germany they regard VW like we regard Ford and they regard Skoda as the more "intelligent" choice.
the other alternative could be the Skoda Superb.....apparently it is a superb motor. Or possibly Seat Exeo - is the same as an A4 but lot less lolly to buy
Merc 190e Cosworth (if you can find one) - a great classic car.
VW Golf. As you do a lot of miles a 1.9 or 2.0 turbo diesel would be good. The engines have a bit of poke (specially mid-range), good for 50-60 mpg and will hold their price very well. Very reliable car. Hatch back so plenty of room. Split fold down rear seats if need more room.

You could look at Seat (Leon 1.9 TD). Very well put together and very reliable.
They are rapidly becoming known as true classics JD - get one before they all become gold dust !

My dad had a 190E, not a cosworth. It made an impression as he has driven Merc's for 20 years and still rates it as a favourite
