Only the airline's entirely voluntary generosity will upgrade you for less that serious money, or alternatively lots of Airmile points (if the airline will accept them in your case). On very, very rare occasions passengers have found themselves upgraded because the flight was nearly full, or some other spurious marketing-type reason. The odds on this happening are probobly not much better than winning the lottery jackpot. In my personal opinion, you may be less likely to be upgraded on BA than some other airlines. Sorry, but that is just the way it is.
An airline won't upgrade normally unless you are a celebrity, sleeping with one of the cabin crew, related to a high up in the airline - or another.

.

Upgrades aren't unknown if they've overbooked economy, and have available seats in business. You stand more chance for this if you are a frequent flyer with that airline, are travelling on a full fare ticket, or on a business travel agent ticket, are smartly dress, on your own, sober and look like you will be quiet and respectable on board.

.

It happened to me once on a long haul BA. That was wonderful. And once I was bumped from business to economy on a shorthaul BD; that was the pits.

As Pinotage says, it's not unknown for them to upgrade you. Arrive early, be a woman travelling on her own, look smart and ask nicely. You may get bumped up to Business Class. In my experience it has worked a couple of times but only when they're overbooked.
