Do they *have* to be intrinsically linked ?
I tried to open an alternative Youtube acct (over and above my existing one)
and it totally messed up my e-mail. I've sorted it out now luckily and everything
seems intact and back to normal.
The only way round this afaics is to use a different browser for the differen t
account.
Any advice for an alternative/simpler method would be gratefully received.

The reason for your problem is each browser can only have one cookie (or PHP session) for each site, the annoyance is caused by youtube and gmail assuming you want to use the same login for both sites so using the same cookie.
You could install the cookieswap addon for firefox to enable you to swap between cookies for each site. not ideal but may be easier than using a separate browser
