Foods to avoid if Diabetic.
31 Answers
If,as seems lilkely(as I now have blood sugars that are too high) if my GP will diagnoses me as Diabetic, can any AB Diabetics tell me what foods I will have to avoid?
I have Googled it,but they only quote food types, and I would rather be informed by someone who is actually Diabetic already.
BTW,the Diabetes was brought on by one of my long term medications it seems.

I have read and digested the answers looobylooo.
My thanks to everyone, and especially you,and to Romaz, zzxxee and tigerlelly, who all have personal experience of being/knowing a diabetic.
I am not daunted,it's just another thing to get used to.
I visit the GP on the 21st(first appointment I could get) and will post and let you know how I get on.
Judging by the cause of high blood sugar(from Google) Diabetes is one of the least to worry about! LOL

Depends how bad you are. After 40 years of looking afer my mother who was Type 1, and injected herself twice a day util she died, I was mortified to be told that I was Type 2 two years ago. My count was 7+something which apparently is over the acceptable level.
I was not put on any medication but given loads of advice as to diet, all of which I ignored, and now eat and drink to my heart's satisfaction. Every check I have had since shows a blood sugar level of beween 5 and 6, way below the threshold. I may be lucky, please don't follow my advice. There is one advantage, though. Twice a year the practice nurse gets to tickle my feet. I'm not sure who derives the greater pleasure, her or me.

mike,
I am sorry that you have had such bad times with Diabetes.
Sadly our Practice Nurse is older than me,and we are both female! LOL
EDDIE,
Oddly enough I am practically(apart from bacon sarnies) vegetarian, and have never eaten fast food.
My GP thinks that it was brought on by my taking Lithium for over 15 years, but we wait and see.

UPDATE:~
I have just seen the GP and my blood sugar is 7.6 (they are not happy if it is over 5.0)
I have to have a glucose tolerance test. That is I starve for 14 hours, have a blood test;then drink a large sugary drink (yipee!) then wait about an hour and then they test the blood again.
The GP seemed to think it might be controlled by diet alone, but we won't know that until after the test results.
Thanks again to everyone, especially the diabetics here on AB.

Diabetes is very individual infliction. I see people who refuse to look after themselves diet wise and have no problems but then I see the most careful and they have retinopathy, neuropathy, diabetic squits and a a whole host of other problems. In my experience diabetic nurses and doctors who specialise in diabetes, endocrinology type things are best placed to advise you once diagnosed as some of the things our visiting gps advise never seem to work out quite right.
After a period of time you will be able to see what effects your blood sugar levels and with some self discipline keep them stable and that's really what you need to do.
