audi a4 hesitation?

hello all i have a 1997 audi a4 petrol 117k miles 1.8se..since ive owned the car over 2 months now its had a slight hesitation problem..mostly when building up to speed when it gets to 2000rpm theres a slight hesitation stutter etc..if i cum off the revs and press slowly its ok..or if i keep my foot down it will get past the hesitation then then goes great kicks in...it sometimes happens wen trying to pull off at junctions specially if i try to pull off fast its as if it doesnt want go...like i say if i cruise all the ive learned to drive the car to..avoid it doing it..cruising the d roads etc its fine smooth as you like..ive tried cleaning the air maff with electrical contact spray etc as heard they are common faults..or maybe its faulty itself..got no engine light on dash etc..some ideas would be great?...wayne
