What exactly has he said/done to warrant the resentment felt towards him by certain sections of Hollywood?

I think that some years ago he was accused of having sex with a thirteen year old girl.

He was charged with raping a minor in the US, the court trial was held after he fled to Europe, he was sentenced in his absence and he is still regarded as a fugitive from justice. The studio was so determined to get the Oscar, they found her and wheeled her for the tv cameras, she has apparently 'forgiven' him, the more cynical would say that some people would do anything for the Oscar.

If Polanski were a priest they would be saying lock him up and throw away the key, and he would rightly face the justice system. Because he's an "artist", we get the "it all happened a long time ago and everything's okay now" routine. Let him face the consequences of his actions the same way anybody else would have to.
