Swizzed by the cash machine
23 Answers
I went to the local shop this morning and used the Link cash machine. I asked for £200 and it only gave me £180 (I had more than this in my account). I told the shop assistant and she said to ring my bank. I did this and they said to get back to them in ten working days. I know of at least three other people that this has happened to and they didn't get their money back. What else can I do (apart from not use the machine again)?

The ATM owner can check how many notes were dispensed. Trouble is that checking through paper tapes of past dates is not a bank's favourite hobby. I lost 20 pounds the same way at HSBC in Stratford while the bank was closed. Left town next day though complained at my next stop. The teller smiled sweetly and was non-committal.
I can see this from the bank's point of view. It would be very easy for anyone to walk in and claim they were shortchanged.
I agree with Scotman. I always use the machine inside the branch itself during opening hours. I always check the money carefully and that way I've always thought I could question the staff immediately if there was a problem. I've used machines inside the branches of the two banks I use for many years now but I've never been given the wrong money. It's a bit harder if you live away from a branch though.
