Ruined Castle overlooking the sea

Where is this beautiful castle? We would love to visit it. The photograph is the background on our computer screen. The castle stands on a huge square rock which juts out into the sea. There is a gravel path going up from the land side.

Please, any suggestions?

It's just outside Aberdeen, went there a couple of years ago, made me do a double take when it appeared as a standard windows7 wallpaper.

It was incredibly pretty, maybe better if I hadn't gone visiting Castles in Aberdeenshire in December though, it was a little chilly :)

Yes, I've found it thanks to you two. Dunnottar Castle is truly beautiful and we'll definitely put it on our list of 'Places to Visit' later this year.

Be careful if the pub in the village up the road, they seem to serve English people their coffee in sugar bowls :)

I'll thank you too ChuckFickens. I've got the same picture and I've wondered where it was. I presumed it was somewhere in Cornwall. I was only slightly out then!

It is Dunnotter, but I would advise if you were going to visit to make it summer time, as a bit of a walk from the centre of Stonehaven which is the nearest town.

They serve coffee in sugar bowls in the pub in Stonehaven (well they did to me!)

I would agree that Dunnottar is too far a walk from Stonehaven!!! It's a good hike from the car park!! would be ok by taxi. Dunnotter was where they filmed scenes for the Mel Gibson film of Hamlet
