I have had a dry tickly cough since just after New Year, nothing seems to shift it,and I am loathe to waste the GP's time to consult her.
I have been gargling with warm salty water, will this help do you think?

Try fresh pineapple (especially before bedtime). But....have you considered you might be developing asthma? Go some spring cleaning this weekend and open the windows and see if that makes things better. Perhaps try a benedrill tablet.

Thanks mikey,
Sadly cannot take pineapple as have a hiatus hernia.
I don't think its asthma, just the remnants of a cold/cough that won't go.I know the doc will give me antibiotics but I would rather get rid of it another way.
pharmacist are very helpful, and will advise.
I always find pholcodine good for a dry cough. I find gargling more effective for a sore throat than a cough.
Nothing will help.....it will go when it is ready.

Thanks sqad,
I rather hoped that that wouldn't be the answer, but realised that it probably would be.
Luckily I live on my own so my coughing isn't annoying anyone, well except the pigeons on the roof outside! LOL
my god-daughter who is in her final year of gp training recommended pholcodine linctus from boots (it's their own brand, less than £3 a bottle) when i had a blooming awful cough over new year, and steam inhalation. the two combined worked a treat. i never, ever buy cough medicine as i think it's a total waste of money and doesn't work, but this linctus really did the trick.

Pholcodine is a cough medicine.
yes dear, i realise that :o)
perhaps i should have made myself clearer. this is the only bottle of cough medicine i have ever (and i do mean ever) bought, and i only spent the money on it because i was desperate and it was cheap.

ethandron,
I am seeing the GP(reluctantly) on Tuesday but I will try the pholcodine linctus in the meantime.
Thanks.
Jo.
