Is it possible to transfer the contents of a downloaded CD from my PC to my laptop? I downloaded a Family Tree from Global Software Publishing Ltd (GSP). it is quite an old version, but I used the CD, and typed everything about my family onto it, and the family tree shows up on my PC. However I tend to use my laptop all the time now and wondered if I could transfer all the data about the Family Tree, from the PC, onto my laptop? My laptop is Windows 7. I am not technical as you all know by now, so if it is possible, please tell me in easy steps ! thanks all in advance :)

Almost certainly, but the people you need to be asking are the people who make the software. GSP may have configured their application so that it saves all of its data in a single folder. If that's the case, chances are that you can simply install the software on your laptop and then copy over the contents of the data folder on the PC.

But they'll be the best people to ask. Also check that you are allowed to install their software on two machines at the same time...

Thanks Mark, I did email them but it came back so not sure if they still exist. I will do a bit more detective work on the laptop and try to find a new email address. Thanks again. If they say I can do it, but I can't understand their instructions (!) can you tell me, I presume I load the CD onto my laptop, but how do I copy the contents of the data folder over to the laptop?
Alternatively, don't you have some sort of manual for the software? Most similar applications have an Export option so that you can save the data onto transferable media e.g. a memory stick, and an Import option to restore it. My aunt uses Family Tree Maker, and that certainly does.

Sorry, a bit more. I do use a memory stick to back up Word documents. Could I try putting this into the PC and seeing if it will download somehow ?

OK, take a step back for a second and then please explain what you meant...
GSP is now Avanquest Software, but the family tree programs they sell are produced by other software houses.

Although you can copy the data files to your laptop, you will need the original software program to read it. I had a copy of the program about ten years ago but have lost the disc. When I was having problems with my 'C' hard drive, I copied the GSP data and program over to a laptop via USB before re-transferring it back again to a new hard drive, but although the data is there the program won't work on either the laptop or desktop. I eventually managed to rescue ten years of research by importing the data to Family Tree maker instead.

I put the CD in my laptop but it said the version was too old. So I have given up now.
