Hello, a bit vague I know but I watched it about 10 years ago on telly and loved it. I think (!) it was about a geeky man who builds a friendly robot that talks, and possibly tries to rob a bank, but I could be making that bit up. I could have sworn the title of the film was the name of the robot, and it began with 'H', but I've never been able to track it down. Any ideas anyone?!

Describe the robot more - was it human looking or distinctly robot/metal looking?  Was it set in modern day?  US or UK?
No idea what aussie film this was but does sound like Fisher Stevens in Short Curcuit (Johnny5),

Are you making fun of me, KebabMeister!?

It was very robot/metal looking, but it was years ago that I saw it so can't describe it!  And yes, set in modern day.  I think it was Australian (hence title of question!).

This has been bugging me for years.  Someone must know what I'm on about...

Sounds like "Malcolm" to me. Definitely Australian, definitely a geeky man.

And forgot to add, there's definitely a robot that they use to rob a bank!
I'd go with 'Malcolm' too, although it's not a robot - just a remote control car with a camera and gun attached and a speaker. Malcolm controls it from home via a tv monitor. Later he builds remote control litter bins to rob an office. Terrific film with music by Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
You're right, it is a quality film. I recall there was a getaway car that split into two as well. Genius!

thanks ninja and also smorodina!  It's a relief to know that I hadn't dreamt it!  Now that you've mentioned the soundtrack, I think that was probably one of the reasons I liked it so much.

big thanks

xx

Making fun, not at all, you were just very sketchy and more info was required!
