Codeine is a derivative of opium, so I suppose yes, if you take enough of it.

Absolutely. I cannot take them because they cause dreadful hallucinations for me. Most people are OK with them, but some aren't - I am one of those.

my 85yr old aunty has just been taken into hospital as she went very confused and started seeing things.she had been taking codeine for ten days as her doc prescribed them cos she couldnt sleep!i told the ward sister that she had been taking the tabs and she didnt seem to think it was them that were making her confused.i am worried now as they are having a physch doctor to see her tomorrow to asess her.lottie how long does it take to get out of your system?she went strange last Monday and is still confused now a week later.

Could also be a UTI. The hospital should be able to let you know. Hope she's better soon.

If she hasn't had any codeine for a week then I highly doubt that is what has caused the hallucinations.

I'm like LoftyLottie, I can't take them due to them knocking me sick and having horrible side-effects.

She could be dehydrated too, the elderly don't always drink enough, and a change of scene can cause confusion too. Codeine's a strange thing to prescribe for sleeplessness, unless it was pain keeping her awake?

I cannot tolerate Codeine, they make me so sick, and confused!.....I Never, ever take them!............

they thought she had a water infection but she hadnt,so the only thing i could think of was the codeine as last year the same thing happened when she was taking co-codamol,she started to see mice all over the place,its very scarey.thanks for the good wishes and the replies .

If you are there still prendi, Codeine make me see Spiders all over the room. This first happened after I had a C section in hospital and I also thought my babe was in intensive care (which he wasn't). On two occasions since, codeine have brought back the spiders.

Prendi. I was only taking them for a day on each occasion, so I don't know how long they would take to get out of the system. As soon as I stopped taking them the spiders and confusion stopped.

Make sure she is taken off them!! Fight for her!! Good luck. It sounds almost certain that it was codeine that has done this. At least tell the psychiatrist what you are thinking.
