My daughter (six years old) has just been diagnosed with meibomian gland dysfunction - basically clogged glands in her eyelids that have caused 2 stye-like cysts. They have got a little better over time but still look a bit yucky (no pain though). Eye doctor at hospital has recommended three-month course of antibiotics along with massage/washing routine, but has said that he'll book her in now for surgery in case it doesn't work, and will reassess in four weeks. He said it would necessitate general anaesthetic. Does this seem risky for something that may get better on its own? Or am I panicking unnecessarily?
Excision of the gland and or cyst (if present) and if it is necessary is best performed in a six year old under general anaesthesia and paediatric anaesthesiology is expertly administered and is as safe as any other procedure..
Thanks Sqad. Is there a reasonable chance of it clearing up before surgery becomes necessary? Have unfortunately known two people who have suffered long-term effects of GA and I know this has coloured my view. I understand that in children the chance of them moving about is just too great and this is what necessitates GA.
My mother had general anaesthetic and she is fine. The doctor told her she could get a headache for life but I think it was just to scare her to stay in bed and rest after the surgery :D She usually can't stand staying in bed and doing nothing.
