For around £25-£30. The relative in question likes fine whiskey, but it is a regular birthday not a special one so not going OTT. Anything other than Glenfiddich/GlenMorangie, something a bit different perhaps?

Macallan if you are not sure how his preferences lie.... or how about a taster pack with 4 or more miniatures covers a few bases

BTW JD is a sour mash isn't it?
On here you will get a lot of personal preference. i am not a whisky drinker.

There's no such thing as a bad Scottish single malt, but one of my favourites - though rarely heard of - is Glendronach. It may well be an eye-opener for your relative as it was originally for me.
Old Pultney is a really nice single malt.
You can't beat a Wee dram of Laphroaig.
Monkey Shoulder is another nice one, it also has the benefit of being in a quite unusual bottle. It is a triple malt though, not a single.

I agree with others that Highland Park is a nice dram. As much as I like Islay malts they are very distinctive and not the everyone's taste, it could be a risky strategy unless you know you Uncle likes them. Having said that I fully support MarkRae's comment about Laphroaig Quarter Cask!
Dalwhinnie.........light and moreish!
Given that there are just over 100 active single-malt distilleries in Scotland, we'll soon have recommended ALL of them at this rate!
McKellans cask strength, a treat, about £30, perhaps £35, if your budget can stretch that far.

I went with a bottle of 10year old Laphroiag Single Malt @ £28 in Tesco!
Good choice jd, I hope your relative likes and appreciates it.
