Well, as per usual I've got the grid filled in, but..............
appart from parliament & onion I'm not sure of any of the other unclued entries.
Can anyone nudge me in the right direction, especially the word starting second row down, top left starting with M - I'm thinking this may be a name?
Any help gratefully appreciated!
Keithsolver has (in error?) given a good clue earlier -- although I still can't
complete the 'Michelson1' group (iif indeed that's what it is); the theme is fairly easy
and will give the missing link.
As usual,as soon as I ask for help the penny drops!
My Mickleson guess was right and the theme word is a charade of 4 elements hinted at by the groups of unclued entries.(4,3,4,4)
I'm still mystified! But I'll work on Michelson (never heard of him before)
Is one group to do with food? I've got steak, onions and banana - don't fancy that meal myself!
Thanks for your help
Hi Ripper,
It's Mickelson(with a K),there are 2 other golfers,which make up one group of 3.
You need another golfer to make up the second part of the charade.
As stymied said earlier,if you find keithsolvers post, there is a pretty good hint for the first part of the charade.
It is a 15 letter word you are looking for.I don't want to mislead anyone with the enumeration given for the 4 parts of the charade.
ONION and BANANA are part of the same group,STEAK is in a different group.
When I saw Keithsolver's post the penny dropped - so thank you. Great fun. I've now solved the groups, 15 letter word and every clue apart from 8D. I do have an answer but can't find it in Chambers or anywhere else. The only other answer I can think of makes the last letter in 19A wrong. Any tips please?
Hi indy-trier. Look at the last three letters of gardens then follow the word play through culminating in e(centre of Kew). The resulting word is in Chambers meaning a very distinctive shape to a leaf. This solution in my case confirms the e as last letter for 19a. Hope this helps. Glad to hear you have got the fifteen letter word!
All done here. But how on earth do Phil and Martin help to give PLES? I can just about see CASEY working, since Paul sounds a bit like PLE.
In general I thought this one felt quite thin. For example, the 15-letter word has nothing to do with the puzzle, so it's hardly a theme. I wonder if it was a case of the editor having to stand in at the last minute.
