About 45 mins ago I was perusing AB when my screen suddenly went black. I switched off and restarted, only to get the never before seen message 'Resuming Windows' after a few seconds of which the machine switched itself off. I repeated this 3 times with same effect. I then did a power cycle and tried again, at which point Windows started up with the message 'Hibernating', and the revolving ring going round and round. After 20 minutes I powered down again, a little longer this time, and on restarting managed to get back into the system. I know I have slow internet connection at the moment but this surely cannot be the reason. My laptop is a Compaq, twenty months old, operating with Vista. Can anyone tell me what has been going on ?
Thanks for that, except I'm on Vista, not XP. Also, my machine died on me when I was in mid-session, for which I can find no explanation. Working at the moment, though I don't know whether to give it 600 mg of Iboprufen, as Sqad would suggest.
Do you mean Malware? I have that, but as a result of visiting some dodgy sites a few months back. Every time I switched on I would get a black screen with the message in big red letters 'Your site is infected'. Malware cleared that, but on this occasion the most toxic site I was looking at was Answerbank!
Yes, I am on Firefox. Never thought of that, but I thought that this was a system problem, rather than an internet one. Any way, thanks very much for your helpful and informative advice.
Not really. My internet is so slow and keeps cutting out (have O2 dongle but no major problems before). I think I'll turn in and run malware tomorrow, see if that fixes it.
Absolutely bizarre. Have run malware and found one nasty which I have removed. Posted a response to this effect which didn't get through. My dongle is now showing me that I have perfect connection, but for how long? I think that this might be an O2 problem, rather than mine. As I type I notice it's just gone from perfect connection to none. Might be time to change my internet provider. Can't understand why if I can get a good signal on my O2 phone I can't get it on my dongle. This has only happened in the last few days. Oops, back to limited strength now, see how it goes.
