Cat Spray

My cat has been neutered and I have never known him spray before. There has been another cat trying our cat flap and stealing my kitties food recently. I have just come home and my house stinks of cat spray and I cannot figure for the life of me where it is coming from.


What can I do? If I dont find the affected area and treat it surely it will just keep on smelling - it's horrendous. I know of vinegar and water solution to treat the area but if I can't figure where it's coming from what do I do

Presume you've been visited by a tomcat and his scent will be sprayed at many different places with that stinking pungent 'territory' scent. A terrible smell, especially when it is not your cat. This spray is designed to last as it warns other tomcats that someone is in residence. It may be quiet friendly with your cat as long as it stays subordinate. Despite popular belief, domestic cats are not loners and have complicated social rules when left on their own, they often make cliques with other cats, the structure of which varies without apparent reason to us and is not completely understood.

For a start you can set your cat flap so that cats can only go out not in. Then treat the most likely places; door posts, wall corners, table/chair legs etc. Sorry I can't be more help. It is an annoying smelly problem, especially when you've fixed your own cat.

I have had this happen.. when we were in rented accom.

The spray will have been done near the entry point more than likely....
Crawl on your hands and knees and look for something about cat bottom height.. a vertical surface.. chair leg? Door frame??
Look for pale yellow dried spray on surface... and wash off with soapy water.
DONT USE BLEACH or ammonia...
It could be your cat doing it - even if they are neutered. My two did!
A tom cats will smell stronger though.
Need to stop the other cat coming in.. and get your cats confidence back up.. go outside in garden with him.... walk around with him... lock flap at night to stop unwanted visitors (or put a sheet of card over flap so cat knows its locked)
You can also get 'feliway' from the vets - its a spray to reassure cats that feel anxious. It contains pheramones - so they think it smells of themselves!

you can buy air freshening bombs...you light them close the windows and doors in the affected area and leave it for an hour or two...smells ought to be neutralised by then...car dealers use them for selling 2nd hand cars to get rid of pongs !!! try Halfords !

Try spraying a solution of biological washing liquid or powder to get rid of the smell

not as bad as a neighbours old and rather senile cat....never pee'd in the same place twice
she managed to cope with the curtains but in the toaster was the last straw... and I had a cat that crapped on the cooker hood took me ages to work out why every time I used the hob the house smelt of cat poo.... well you don't look on top do you...only when spring cleaning

Thank god mine only leaves fur on the cooker...
