So you get email notification and so you can see easily in the side bar there >> if there have been any further replies to the thread.

I find them handy if there is a thread I'm interested in but don't want to comment on. Much easier than trailing through to try to find it again later.

There was one a while ago that I didn't participate in but found it interesting so it was handy to subscribe to it so I had a quick link to see it rather than trawl through loads of posts to find it.
