I've asked many before the difference between "i.e" and "e.g" and all I get is a blank face. So what is the difference between i.e and e.g?

In terms of examples.

I.E. is used to explain a sentence or a word.

"He was spewing up (ie he was vomiting)".

EG is used for an example

"I like choclate bars (eg twix and mars).

ie comes from the latin "id est" which means "that is"

eg is also latin and comes from "exempli gratia" which means "for the sake of example".

For instance, "I went to see my mother's sister i.e. my aunt in Australia". or
