Paying for a Residential Home ....
11 Answers
Not sure if I've posted this in the right section but my elderly mother has recently had a stroke and is in hospital at the moment. We have been told that she is 'borderline' as to whether or not she goes home or not as her mobility/health is not good. (May have to go in a rehab home first). The social worker has said that we will discuss the money side of things when it comes to it but if she has savings she will have to pay. She does not have any savings just an average amount of money in the bank and her pension and a small pension from my late father. I have applied for Attendance allowance and have been told verbally that she will get it. Can anyone tell me how she pays for the Rest home and if we will have to sell her property? Thanks

While there is any question of her going into res care there is this thing called "disregard" which basically gives your mum a bit of wait and see time to see if she gets well enough to go home. During this time, ss should pick up the bill for her res care. If she does go into res care, then yes her house will need to be sold to fund it, unless there is a dependent still living there, in which case, social service put a charge against the house and reclaim it when the house is sold. My experience is that generally, they understand that such things are difficult and take time and aren't going to be banging on the door with a big bill in a hurry. It may be possible for her to be at home with a big package of support, again it's all a bit wAit and see after a stroke

Thank You! At the moment they are waiting for a room for her at a rehab home but she has got to want to be able to do things for herself again and at the moment she doesnt want to. She is also being treated for pneumonia and having another scan next week..so things arent looking very good. We had a meeting yesterday and they dont think sending her home with a big care package is really an option because of her balance, she keeps falling. So its looking more likely that she'll be going into a rest home and I'm just worried about how much its going to cost her!
If she hasn't got the cash SS should arrange it. Most of the rehab places are temporary so she wouldn't be expected to sell her house to pay for it. She'd need to actually have over 23k (I think) in the bank before they look at charges. It's only if it's permanent that they'd expect her to sell her house. All other avenues will be explored first.

you will get some time before a decision is made,if your mother has to go into a home her financial affairs will be looked at,she is allowed around 13 thousand in her bank this I believe has gone up abit, also if she owns her own home this would have to be sold to pay for her stay in the home, care costs are about £500/£600 a week
