this thread is about the rudeness of old people. the fact that other people are rude too is irrelevant...i dont think anyone would dispute that people of all ages are rude, but dotty wanted to focus on old people.
bringing up every other type of rudeness does not negate what she has said.
i agree that dotties sarcasm to the old lady was rude but to be honest it sounded to me like the woman thought she was above other people and should be treated like royalty - anmd kicked off for no good reason - i have experienced that from old people too...
and as for worrying if they have had a bad day - what about my bad day? they dont think about that do they? we all have bad days and dont go round kicking off about carrier bags...thats no excuse.
in the main i think old people are polite and nice but a good portion of them are not and behave in a shocking manner...to excuse that because they are old is patronising and wrong as they really should know better.

many years ago i witnessed an old lady fall and drop all her shopping - i went over picked her up and her shopping and carried it home for her and helped her along - she would not allow me to escort her to the doctors which was nearer than her house about 100 yards up the road - she would not let me take the shopping or the dog lead on her BROKEN hand...because that was the only thing stopping me snatching her handbag behind it... obviously
you see i was dressed a bit hippyish and rock chick so of course i was no good... despite my help...she kept staring at me wideeyed and insisted i knock on the door of her neighbour before i helped her inside...he also began giving me supiscious and odd looks and speaking to me in a stern manner as though to make me too afraid to 'try anything'
once i got inside with the bags they both just ignored me...so i said politely do you need anything else, both ignored me, so i said ill be off... and walked out...he shot out after me...and ushered me out...presumably making sure i didnt steal anything....
no thankyous or anything
it was horrible. i wish i hadnt bothered.

Woofgang, I never said that pensioners are not allowed to be well off! Where the heck did you get that idea?
I was just pointing out that dotty is correct that the pensioners where she works are better off than most, they have a habit of letting you know it too! A large proportion of them look down their noses at you and are very, very rude to anyone they feel is beneath them.

Perhaps all us oldies ought be put up aganst the wall and be shot :)
I worked in retail all my working life and I've seen all sorts .I started out in retail in 1966 where we told the that the customer is always right and our fingernails and stockings were inspected before we went on the shop floor . We had to be smart and polite .Any complaints were referred to the manager .
I'm afraid that these days ,young and old customers alike are sometimes subjected to nonchalant sales staff who think they they're the bees knees and only deign to serve you whilst regaling their colleagues about last nights beano whilst chucking your change at you .
As for being old .Well Dot I'm 63 .I've slogged for what I have and if I'm a well off oldie it's only through my own ( and my husbands ) endeavours .I don't feel that world owes me anything or act as if I'm better than anyone else .
I always try to be polite to sales people because I've been there . I know exactly what its like .
Calm yourself down .
