MOT expiry.

My MOT expires march 20th, which happens to be a sunday. If I take it to 'my man' at the garage for a good servicing and approval of my undercarriage (sorry - for a moment I thought I was on chatterbank....) on monday the 21st, will I be infringing any laws?

I can't take it earlier than the expiry date as first of all I am waiting on a delivery of a part via e-bay (£35 instead of teh peugeot trade price of £200) due to an unfortunate mishap - misjudgement of spatial awareness, of which I am exceptionally good at. And also I am going to be away for a few days before the 20th.

Will I be ok taking it a day later than the certificate expiry date?

I always seem to remember mine is due about 3 days after it has expired and never had a problem. It might be worth getting it checked out first though so you know if it's likely to pass and you won't need any work doing that might add on a few days.

Unless scrapes scratches dents and Rolf Harris didgeridoo noises under the bonnet make for a MOT failure, then I should be alright !!

Yes you can drive a car that is out of MOT as long as you take it to your nearest testing station and that you have an inspection booked in prior.

You can also get an MOT done up to 30 days in advance of expiry of MOT, this will then run from the end of your last MOT, effectively giving you 13 months MOT. I don't think these rules/laws have changed recently.

You are allowed to drive your car to the MOT garage when your MOT has expired as long as you have booked the test.

Oh well, I should be ok then, because it will be booked in on the 21st (or the 22nd) and no-one does MOTs on a sunday anyway, do they?

I shall risk it for a swisskit. Or a toolkit.

I'm not sure that Ratter is completely correct.

I don't think there is anything saying it has to be the nearest testing station.

i did that ratter an my new expiry date was the date i took it, not the old date - actually lost a months mot

i think what you say may only be if it fails perhaps...?

Joko, if you present the existing MOT certificate at the test they will give your new MOT expiry date as 12 months from the expiry of that certificate

Perhaps the MOT was conducted a day or two before it became eligible for the extension.

You can renew your MOT up to one month before it expires without affecting your annual expiry date. You can find out when the earliest date to MOT your vehicle is by checking the front of the pass certificate.

There is no need to present the previous certificate because all MOT details are now held on a central database.

You don't even have to take your old MOT certificate. It's all done by computer now and the computer checks to see if you have any existing entitlement before printing the new certificate. That's how it worked with me at my local garage three weeks ago.

i went about a month early an my new certicifate is also a month early - they did not account for the original expiry dat...can o still get it changed>/ it was about 6 months ago

joko....I am surprised that your present MOT certificate does not show its expiry date as being some thirteen months after your last test. All MOTs ( as indicated by ABerrant & Graham-W) are held in a central data base.
