All of a sudden our home phone is not working.

When trying to phone out there is no ring tone - only a sort of echoey sound. Its a bit like when someone calls you but dosen't put the phone down at their end when the call is finished

There is power going to the phone

The broadband internet goes through the same line and this is still working so it can't be a problem with the line itself.

I have also tried using the phone with the internet off but it still dosen't work.

When people try to contact us they are greeted with a caller is busy tone.

We have tried contacting the phone company (home call) and they seem to think that the line is OK

Any ideas?

I had this a while ago but our internet connection went down at the same time. BT said it was due to work on the line, interestingly it did not affect all houses in my village.

Try giving BT a call to check the line as its their line that the phone company would be using. BT fault line =  0800 800 151

I had inadvertantly put the phone line into an identical shaped socket next to the correct one. my phone was juts dead. there is symbol a little like the one below above the wrong socket (the two lower boxes should be closer to the line though)

Try a different filter on the line.  Does it happen from all phone extensions?
