My children have just returned from the garden with an empty bird egg. They want to identify what type of bird laid it. I have searched on the internet but have been unable to find anything to help. The egg is 3cm long and is a turquoise colour with brown smudges. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.
My goodness, that was quick! joined 5 mins ago and already 2 answers!
Blackbird sounds plausible as I have seen one in the garden. Looking at the Mistle Thrush picture, it's close but not exact. The markings on this egg are uniform whereas the Thrush egg seems plainer at one end. My egg is like someone has splattered it with brown inside the mum and it was still wet when she laid it :-)
Fantastic! That's the very boys! Unfortunately, the kids have just found a dead chick. They are gutted. It's weird because the centre of its tummy had been pecked away showing us the insides - it is 8cm long. What would do that and not eat it?
I have a nest in my wood pile, thoughts it was a blackbird, seen 1 dart in and out from time to time. Today there are 2 eggs in there. 1 is as per the photo above (posted in 2009, hope this thread is still live), the other is a bit larger and more pale, almost cream. Thoughts?
Thank you
Alan
