If I am wealthy, and I have worked hard to get that way, am I obligated to reach down and pick up the average people and support the poor who dont want a better life?

what is Rich anyway? the poorest person in UK is Richer than 90% of the population of the world, so it's all relative.
I think it was Mark Twain who said there are only three certainties in life - birth, death and taxes. I don't like the latter, but I don't have a choice, and I take consolation in the fact that when I'm unable to pay my own taxes, then I'll be able to benefit from those who do - just as others have benefitted from what I've paid in the past.

Of course, if you don't want your pension, your subsidised health care, emergency services and all the rest ...

Not that I'm wealthy, mind, but I like to think I work as hard as the next person.
The only people who should feel obliged to help the less fortunate are the ones who are born into wealth without having to lift a finger.

Those who get richer through working usually appreciate the struggle of those less fortunate and often contribute to Society in same way without being told to do so.
Always... it's what makes us human, makes us caring, and ultimately benefits not only those you're reaching down to, but yourself.
It is not only people who have material wealth who want to help those less fortunate than themselves.

People donate money because they want to - they see that the world around them does not treat everyone fairly and they want to give something back to the world.
