I think most people don't understand the "fustian" reference. If you can explain that, you win the prize. ;-)
Fustian, as well as a coarse cloth,also means an unnatural style of writing or speaking, as a bad actor, one who "hams" would do.
p.s It is also a drink prepared with egg yolks and lemon, which may go some way to accounting for the yellow.

Mike, full marks for your explanation. The solution, when published, will confirm your hypotheses (or not, as the case may be). I couldn't find any reference (in Chambers) to the drink, so "yellow hammer" might be more correct.
My Chambers (2003) gives the drink as the third definition of fustian. You are probably right about yellowhammer, I was no doubt trying to read too much into it.
You're right! It's in my Chambers also - I was probably looking up "aardvark" by mistake.
