My mum's eye doctor recommended surgery for cataract removal within 3 months before it gets worse. She's an active 70 year old. Should I be worried about the surgery?

Not at all. It is a very straightforward, painless operation
No.
It's a very routine procedure, should last no longer than 30 minutes.
As an active 70 year old, your mum will in all probability be done as a day case too, invariably most are these days.

Recovery took a week to double check for infection in the incision. Now the incision is so small no stictches are needed and the rolled up replacement lens is easily inserted through the small cut... In and out in 20 minutes. The most uncomfortable part is the temperature of the operating room... it's very cold, at least here in the U.S.
No, don't worry. My mum (aged 79) has had it done, and is very pleased with the result.
No and she will be amazed at how much better and clearer she will be able to see afterwards. I've had both done and for the past two years I haven't had to have new glasses.
I had cataract surgery five weeks ago. I was wide awake, but I didn't feel a thing !! I was back at home within 4 hours. I had to have drops in four times a day for four weeks and everything is fine. Don't worry.
My friend (now 77) had cataracts removed from both eyes a few years ago, with no problems, and she's very glad that she did so.

No. My mother had cataracts on both eyes removed within about 6 months of each other, the operatioins were painless, and she ws very happy she'd had them done - she was around 75 when she had the ops. I've also had one done, and need to have the other eye done in the near future, and am not worried about it - which is quite something for a born worrier! I found it amazing how much brighter colours were!
No worries at all. It is minor surgery and she will be home the same day.
My Dad's had both eyes done - worst part was remembering to use the drops, afterwards!

Thanks for sharing your opinions and experiences. I know I shouldn't worry. I just wanted other people to tell me. And yes, remembering the eye drops will be the challenge.
Hi amber_stone,

Not at all......piece of cake.......my neighbour had a consultation recently and had a cataract diagnosed....told appointment would be around June and sent in the post. He mentioned to the specialist that he was ready for it anytime and if a cancellation came up, he would'nt mind coming in at short notice.
He was called a couple of weeks ago on a Tuesday afternoon at 2.00pm......asked to come in at 3.30pm...........all done by 4.30pm........home shortly after that. He's 77.....and says it's the best thing he ever had done, as he can see so much better and describes it as "having your dirty windows finally washed ". His eye looks so much clearer too and eyedrops used after the op for a while to stop any irration that may/may not occur. He's really happy he had it done and is waiting for the other one now.

My Uncle had it done too a while ago and says the same thing....best thing done. :0)

Dont worry for your Mum....she'll be fine.
