no you're not wasting my time, its very kind of you to respond - but yes I had seen both of those & discussion forum.  I thought it would be useful to see if there was an AB user who could give me some thoughts on it.  Its a big leap to change career and I guess I'm looking for as much info/personal thoughts as poss before I make the leap!

Hi there, I too have been thinking about this career move, but I cannot afford to study as I have a mortgage and am on my own. It is a worthwhile job but needs a big commitment  with studying.  However, I have looked into alternatives and Local Councils run something called Careline or an equivilent and this is a similar role.  It involves assessing people for the appropriate care package, encouraging them to stay at home and have all the emergency cover needed ie:  Red pull cords, and pendants or watches in case of a fall or some other emergency.  This you do not have to have a qualification such as those for OC's, but you are encouraged to take NVQ's which can't be a bad thing.  I am being made redundant next year but not until at least April/May time so it is something for me to think about.  Just thought I would share this with you.  All the best.

that's really useful I'd not heard of Careline - I'll look in to it too, as the cost of studying again in my 30's is worrying me.
