The last post, although I am no Italian scholar, I think reads, "Please speak more slowly I don't speak Italian", rather pointless in my view.

I think you might be confusing "Je ne veux pas" (I do not want) with "Je ne peux pas" (I am not able). Much easier if we all turned to Latin. No room for confusion there!

Mike, I'm very impressed with your French! Superb! Are you fluent or do you just remember it from school days and do you speak any other languages?

This sentence isn't french. You'd either say; je ne comprends pas le français OR je n'arrive pas à comprendre le français OR if it's really François and not français; Je ne comprends pas François OR je n'arrive pas à comprendre François.
Je ne peux pas comprendre...isn't french. Lesson over! Sorry....

Fairly, though not completely fluent, as there was a gap of about 20 years between leaving school and taking up the language again. At one point I was fluent in Russian, but not having really used it since leaving university I am a bit rusty and occasionally have to rely on a dictionary. I also have a working knowledge of Welsh, which I taught myself a few years back, just for fun. Now there's a challenge!

Must bow to coccinelle. It is perfectly grammatical French, but not something that a French person would ever say.

I remember being taught the two ways of translating "can" into French, using pouvoir or savoir depending on the meaning. " Je ne peux pas nager" - " I can't swim (because I've broken my leg)", or "je ne sais pas nager" - "I can't swim, (because I don't know how to)"

In English we say I can see and I can hear but in french it's just Je vois or J'entends

Except in Belgian French I believe, Mike, where they say vous ne savez pas garer là for you can't park there.
