My Daughter is having trouble sleeping, We went to the doctors around 6 months ago on ly to be told to buy a bike, The not sleeping has got a lot worse lately and for the last 2 weeks she finally drops off around 3am, She had a period 3 weeks ago and then another one a week later, She is completely out of sorts, and just starting A levels (year 2 ) so is up around 6.45am so not getting alot of sleep at all, I have just been to the pharmacist and bought some syndol to see if that will help, she has tried the herbals as well as lavender and the night room sprays, Can anyone help with advice on getting her to go to sleep.
The pharmacist did say to go back to doctors and ask for melatonin? If she is no better I will get her a doctors appointment on monday.
She can book her own appointments but as we live in the middle of no where I have to take her, so the time has to fit in with me for work, The bike does not work really we also walked the dogs miles on saturday.
I refuse to buy chocolate at the moment, She never has liked fizzy drinks, She mainly drinks fruit volvic, To be honest she looks so miserable at the moment she may well be depressed, she is moody but arent all 17 year olds. We have tried Nytol as well as panadol nights, It's the getting to sleep is the problem.
when i asked about eating, i meant does she have regular eating habits? Has she lost her appetite?
Will she go into the appointment by herself? It just seems like it might be hard to speak to the doctor if she does feel down if you are there (or waiting outside to hear what the doctor said)
Sounds daft .. but sometimes a low background noise ... tv/ radio can relax you. Sometimes the anxiety of feeling you 'must' get to sleep can in fact keep you awake.
Please don;t give her syndol - I use this for severe headaches and a 'side-effect' is a spaced out feeling for a few hours and I then feel shattered for the next 24 hours, this won't help her at all. In addition syndol is known for being quite addictive ( I read it's the 4th most addictive painkiller)
Sorry, another quick thought - if she has a tv / dvd in her room, you could try watching programmes with David Attenborough, like Life on Earth or Blue Planet. I find his voice really soothing and the programmes are usually very calming, I regularly fall asleep to them.
Thanks sorry I had to come off for a mo, She has a driving lesson at 7.30 tonight ( she booked it ), i will get her a doctors appointment in the morning Iv'e just tried to and there closed for training. I will run her a bath before bed tonight and put a relaxing cd on I have one that came with a spa set at christmas, No syndol tonight then but will get a doc's appointment tomorrow and go into town while she is there, Thanks for all your replys, she looks so tired she can't put her words together so I am hoping that she will nod off.

herb teas with valerian, verbena and passiflora might help made really strong two teabags to a cup and leave to stand for 5 mins about 30 mins before bedtime
rowanwitch i might try this, i don't have a problem dropping off though, but staying asleep. I have tried endless things, and so far nothing has worked. Too much liquid before bedtime is a bit of a problem as well.
Never heard of Syndol but if it's as strong as you suggest I'm surprised it can be bought over the counter. I can buy nothing stronger than Co-codamol without a prescription.
josaphine - I would be inclined to get the Doc to give her the once over, with some blood tests etc. Check thyroid aswell.
I have the tv on in my bedroom and always fall asleep, so as others have suggested, background noise may help. It does sound like she could be anxious though, perhaps the onset of the A Levels. Hope you get it sorted. xx
If she is having trouble with her periods, that would make her feel very run down.
Perhaps if the doctor gave her some medication for her period problems,rather than
dosing her up with painkillers which could make her more tired that would help. If
your doctor is unsympathetic to your daughter's needs, you could try another doctor.

josaphine i too have trouble sleeping alot (age 24) night nurse sometimes helps me drop off but im into relaxation and i dowloaded an ap to m ipad and iphone ad i swear to god its 30min long iv never made it by 15mins....xx
