Of course they do.Dogs are very intelligent.For a start their sense of smell is a zillion times better than ours. They attune to our feelings.As a dog owner my dog knows if I am feeling upset and so on.
He knows exactly what is going on at any given time.They roll around when they are happy, they grin,they sulk....by their posture they can tell you exactly how they feel.Why do think a dog wags his tail when his owner appears.

Hang on shaneystar, I'll have to differ with you on this one just a tad. Dogs do feel certain things like pain, someone has touched them, it depends on what you are asking about tamndiamond1. What kind of "feel" do you mean?

Dogs are smart, but it is thru observation that they win hands down over us. They have to, it can mean survival. Your dog knows you are sick because...1. you may not get up like normal and lay in bed extra time...2.you don't have a bounce in your step like before, 3.you may be bent over or your face is contorted, etc.....They now their "routine" is off, and you are not acting right, your "body language"is sending signals. They give "calming signals", wag tail, grin, they sulk? if you mean kind of hunker their body down, or put ears back and lower head?and look away from you, those are calming signals, it is meant to diffuse any situation in case any thing hard "might" come from the head honcho, an expert on dogs named Turid Rugaas did a big study about these things, http://www.canis.no/rugaas/index.php . MIne has come from training hundreds of dogs over 30 years, but I too would love to think my dog loves me and knows I don't feel good, but that is the human side of me talking not the professional. Well my dog definitely does sulk !!
Prime example..the other morning ,teeming with rain and he knows it's walkies time.Now we are both not getting any younger and I didn't fancy going out in the rain so I said to him "No..walkies later"..whereupon he hurls himself into his basket,sticks his nose under his blanket and gives me a filthy look.!! About half an hour later it stopped raining so I said "walkies" and he got up in the basket and turned his back on me and laid down again !!
You are quite right..they have us over a barrel at times !!

There is a logical reason why he did this, but I enjoyed the story so much I am not gonna ruin it for you by explaining to you why he did that....LOL

forgot to add that  my girl ignores me when I come back from a weekend at my mums. Mr Woofgang says that she spends all friday night waiting at the front door, settles down on saturday and then when she meets me on sunday, she blanks me completely!

woofgang my name comes from a series of books by Anne Mccaffrey called the "Dragonriders of Pern" I read that book and fell I love with dragons, (I have collected quite a few), I now consider myself one, a rider not a dragon...LOL , I do drive a motorcycle, so it is appropriate I think..I have been blessed by so many special animals coming into my life, that I think they imprinted before they were born and found me, if you read the book you would know what I am talking about. How's that for an answer, did it answer your question?
