Andy Coulson told to report to Police Station

so who will be next, and how does that leave the Murdoch empire.

He is also in trouble over his evidence at the Tommy Sheridan trial where, under oath, he said that the News of the World had never paid the police for information.
This week, News International revealed emails from Coulsen detailing payments to the police. That makes him a perjurer and could face prison. It also makes Sheridan's conviction unsound, and there are already calls for his release.

News International are conducting a very late damage limitation exercise. Closing NotW (and opening 'The Sun on Sunday') have been their Plan B if they could not keep a lid on their wrong doing. They can say they have done everything to make amends for their digraceful conduct, and that they are now 'fit and Proper' to own BskyB which is the bigger prize.

The NotW was Britains biggest selling newspaper, but its circulation had halved. Television on the otherhand offers greater opportunities and missing a couple of editions of a tabloid sunday (before opening a rebranded one) is a small price to pay.

Gromit expect you are right, though i feel sorry for those people who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. Perhaps they can be employed on other papers.

if /when the notw shuts will this mean they will not have to pay as much compo to victims in the phone hacking scandal as the paper no longer exists

I meant about all the people who had nothing at all to do with this, and besides if compensation were to be paid, couldn't that come from other sources, Murdoch's empire is wide and he is not short of a few quid

DrF, the compensation is coming from News International, the publisher, not the paper itself, so it will still be due

some talking heads were rattling on about this last night. some questions should be asked of cameron who appointed coulson even after advice from colleagues and opposition that this would be a substantial error.

the Guardian editor said he had notified Cameron of what he knew about Coulson, even before he was hired. Cameron thought he knew better, apparently.

It's odd that, although Cameron is a former PR man, he doesn't actually seem to have as much instinct as Blair did for what the public will put up with. His lack of concern that Lord Ashcroft, the Tories' big donor, was dodging taxes didn't seem to upset him either.

He's giving a statement shortly, I believe.

Cameron did say that he believed everyone deserved a second chance, which they do, and coulson did resign, perhaps in the knowledge that the poo was going to hit the fan. As to money men in Blairs house, plenty of those with their hands dirty.
