Is it true that consultants won't carry out the procedure until the patient is at least 35? I've heard that if you want it below that age, you have to pay privately.
Thanks

My friend had it done when he was 27, and he didnt pay.....
I don't know but my female friend wanted to be sterlised after she had her fourth child at under 30, and the doctor tried very hard to put her off. Some GPs do vasectomies in the surgery now if they have a minor surgery facility, the man would need to ask his GP in the first instance.
It's a lose-lose situation for an NHS consultant. If they sterilise someone who may enter another married-type relationship and want children - problem. If they sterilise someone who has a child under five, the age group most likely to die (huge apologies, but this is factually the case) - again, problems if and when the bereaved parents decide to try again. Yes, you can get almost anythingdone privately, but will undoubtedly be required to sign disclaimers re. change of mind or personal circumstances.
BTW My info is that consultants round here recommend you wait till youngest child is 5 - they don't go on age of adult but will suggest counselling in a 'less mature' bloke.

my husband was 29 when he had it done on the nhs. we had 2 children, 3 and 5 years old. a few brief questions for both of us, a week later job done.
My first husband had the snip when he was 26 but had to go private.......he regretted it when he got married again.
I was 28 and had mine done privately only because of the NHS waiting list. They were obliged to do the procedure but i decided to go private before i changed my mind.
My oh was 30 when he had his done on the NHS.
Husband was 33 and went private . He was a bit :o( when I had hysterectomy 5 years later . But we had managed 3 children in 4 years so could have had another 3 if he had waited.

Thanks all for answers. Maybe it depends where you live. Not sure if I've finished my family yet but definitely want my husband to have the snip before he's 35 otherwise that's 8 more years of using condoms :(
you shouldnt contemplate the snip until you are 100% certain you are finished your family, there is no going back, reversals almost always end in failure, you should view a vasectomy as a permanant method of protection
Too late for me now, but can the snip cause any problems of any kind later in life?
it depends on the procedure garmard, some people have a troublefree op, some people can be left with pain for months even years afterwards.
Have you got balls then Cazzz? : )
yep ;)
prob bigger than mine too.
M OH had it done when he was 39, but our kids had just turned 1 & 2 - he was on the list for 6 months though so they were still babies when he put his name down. They did ask what we would want to do if anything happened to one or both of our kids but seemed satisfied with the answer that they were irreplacable and we wouldn't just have another one.
Pay 'privately' - priceless. pass the tissues please somebody
I was hoping no-one would notice that ttfn......
How did he manage that, nannon? I had to wait until I was 30, and then I had to go through hoops for it. I had to go round in circles until I had it done at the age of 30 on the NHS, but you can get it done either by BPAS or Marie Stopes.

I think it cost at least £395. Is this a snip?
