Why so many? They are never anywhere near full so there cant be that many disabled people using them.

They're located close to the doors so as to ensure that a parent pushing a buggy (possibly with two or three young children running around at the same time) is exposed to the minimum amount of traffic when going from their car to the store.
As a traffic survey supervisor, I've monitored car parking on plenty of supermarket car parks. I've frequently had to report that there are TOO FEW disabled spaces (for example at the Sainsbury's stores on the Norwich ring road and in the centre of North Walsham) where there are often around 30 cars with valid blue badges but far fewer spaces available).

Don't get me started on Mum and Sprog spaces! Our local Tesco has plenty of spaces BUT the foot path between the two rows has such a steep camber that your shopping trolleys veers off to the right! so you end up wrestling with it to try and keep from smashing into the front of the cars on your right. Very hard to do with a trolley full of shopping and two sprogs!!
