10% over I think. ie 44 in a 40, 66 in a 60.

I feel pretty sure you're safe.
No probs there.
The Association of Chief Police Officers has a set of guidelines for speeding which suggest that a fixed penalty should be offered when the speed achieved is (10%+2mph) over the limit. So for a 40mph zone this is 46mph and it is likely that the camera is set to trigger at 46mph at the lowest.

The guidelines also suggest that a fixed penalty is not offered but a summons issued when the speed reaches 35mph in a 20mph zone, 50mph (30), and 26mph over the limit for zones of 40mph and above.
Sometimes they flash below the limit and everyone gets wound up about it.
There's a camera locally that flashes even with no traffic on the road!!!
I've been flashed, and penalised, for 34mph and 35mph in a 30mph zone!

If your speedo was showing 41/42 then you were probably only travelling at about 37mph.
