This phrase appears in "Alice Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll, in the chapter about the Lion and the Unicorn.
The Unicorn sees Alice and asks "What is this?". "This is a child!' Haigha replied ... "It's as large as life, and twice as natural!"
"As large as life and quite as natural" was an expression known in Lewis' time; he apparently adapted it for humourous effect.
