I bought two curious vegetables from a market but have no idea what they are. One is a red chilli-type thing but it is round and crinkly and the size of a plum. The other is a green, bobbly, cucumber type thing, tapering at one end and is quite flexible- not tough. I have no idea if it is a type of chilli, cucumber, cabbage?! These were from a small shop run by an Indian couple with lots of Indian food inside too. Any ideas? I can't even find them on google!

the red chill type thing could be a scotch bonet chilli.

Dave.
It might help if you posted photos of them?
It sounds as if the chilli type thing is a Scotch Bonnet chilli. If so these are one of the hottest chilli,s so be careful.
I too am getting some odd vegetables from my daughter who gets a box of local produce. There are yellow beans that look exactly the same as green beans so I will cook them the same way. There is also a yellow item which is like a marrow but small and a squashed ball shape (a bit like a flying saucer). There needs to be a website of pictures and what they are and how to cook them.
Scotch bonnet chilli, (aka habaňero chilli) sounds right. For the cucumber-like thingy, have a look here...

Grasscarp, the flying saucer sounds like a variety of squash, I have seen what you describe.

As there was also basil in the veg box I can do this - and as suggested in the feedback add some bacon and cheese to make a meal of it.
the cucumber thing could be a Dudhi, i got one from Tesco once, was bit like cross between a cucumber and a form of squash.
The green thing could actually be a cucumber. Home grown one sometimes have nobbles on - almost like prickles - well ours did anyway!
You are right mayennaise, there is a cucumber among my vegetables from the box. It has nobbles, but is quite the crispest and tastiest cucumber I have ever tasted. Beats shop bought ones.
