ipod touch OS update

I've just bought a 3rd gen ipod touch & have tried to download Mirror football app but it says I need iphone 4 software update. Can I download it?

Synch the touch through iTunes and in the summary menu check for update. It should then download and update the relevant iOS4 version

Thanks but when I check for update it says ipod software 3.1.3 is up to date

You may not be able to use iphone 4 software on an older 3rd version.

Are you sure it's 3rd gen?
8 and 16gb versions can upgrade as far as 4.2.1. All others are compatible with all versions of iOS4

What version of iTunes are you running?
You need to be at least on version 9.2 (current version 10.4)

Thanks all . I am running itunes 10.4 . It says version 3.1.3 in setting on the ipod touch so I assume that means it's 3rd gen. It's 8GB

version 3.1.3 refers to the version of the operating system (iOS) you are running not the iPod generation. You probably have a second gen iPod.

The main difference is at the back where the 3rd gen has more details etched on the bottom of the case.

Thanks Milvus the link you gave opens but only to a blank page. There appears to be etching on near the bottom on the back but it's so faint & tiny that I can't make it out
