Long range weather forecasters are talking about a harsh winter ahead. How could they know? Or rather, what makes them think so?

the bit of seaweed on the wall
IMO they never get the forecasts right. Today was supposed to be wet and windy here (nw). It's windy, but no rain so far and it was warm in the sun this morning and me and my visiting friend from bonny Scotland had a lovely long walk with Bruno. Weren't we supposed to have a good summer this year - 'nuff said !!
I think they make guesses based on previous weather pattern trends and computer programs that make a guess based on current information

they did say we were supposed to have a very hot summer, but that did not materialise..
It did on the days I went out...
The billion pound weather system, or going on last years stats, or so it seems.

steg, now even i know there is no such thing as Englandshire, come on, harsh as in mild in comparison with scotlandshire

Harsh in Scotland is when the whiskey freezes. Harsh in England is when there's half an inch of snow.
half inch of snow harsh.... coooool.... i'll get ma sunbathing gear oot of storage
Basically Sandy....they cant.......they have a punt at the next few days and usually get it wrong, but in order to stay employed they just......yep......guess!

They got that expected heatwave of the summer here spot on apparently, eh?.....NOT!....even if i was'nt here much.

Best way of telling the forecast....stick your head outta the window, dress accordly, light jacket/fleece etc and take a brolly just in case.

That'll be 1000 squid please.... ta :0)
I get the yahoo weather for my area, and nearly every day it says " chance of rain" I could write that forecast: tomorrow there's a chance of sun, but there may be a risk of rain, it will probably get dark tonight, and light again tomorrow morning, when there may be rain or sunshine, and a chance of getting part of it right if you cover all possibilities!.
In Spring last year, the forecast was for a long hot summer, and that didn't happen.

During the summer, we were to have an Indian summer, that didn't happen either.

I've got deja vu about this posting of mine, been posting about their lack of skill in forecasting.
