How can I get those horrible burnt particles off the bottom of my iron without damaging it or having to buy a new one??

wait until it goes cold and use a scourer for non stick pans or a little salt and cooking oil in a paste as an abrasive clean well afterwards though

I'm not sure I know what you mean, but would a scourer or wire wool not get it off?

a lot of modern irons have coatings that would be damaged by steel wool or harsher scourers

A nylon scourer like the ones for non-stick pans should be ok. You can buy sole plate cleaners from places like Lakeland & Robert Dyas.

You can buy iron cleaner from supermarkets or Betterware.

my iron cleaner is called "iron cleaner" and it comes from an ironmonger's. Brand is Vilene/Freudenberg. It looks a bit like a large white lipstick and cost £2.20. You rub it on the warm iron and rub the iron on a clean rag to get the muck off. Might take a couple of goes. Smells dreadful, though
