The plant is a dracaena marginata and can be pruned back to whatever height you require. The stem that is to be pruned doesn't necessarily have to be pruned to a leaf joint...it can be pruned back to bare stem.

Thanks andyjevs, I want to prune the tallest branch back to the main stem, do I need to put anything over the joint to protect it, when it is cut? Hope this makes sense !!

Nope....just hack it back, it'll probably do it the world of good and you should get two or three small shoots come out from where you pruned it.

Thanks very much, I will take a deep breath and let you know the results !

Wow that's impressive judiewudie! I'm off to Body & soul now though to see if anyone can help with a cricked neck! ;-)

If you put the cut off branch in water it might make roots but will take a long time (months).

Sorry about your neck robinia! Probably been sleeping in a draught .. Anyway on second thoughts I will ask my husband to cut off the branch in case it goes wrong .. coward aren't I? I don't think it would take root, it's like a tree .. lovely but getting too tall.
